What factors do we consider when thinking about EV Charging fire safety?

  • Egress paths of travel
  • Smoke hazard management
  • EV Charging Shutdown
  • Fire detection using smoke detectors and thermal detectors to AS1670.1
  • Location of EV charging spaces
  • Protection by sprinklers
  • Firefighter fire attack planning (ESIP)
  • Other factors depending on the building, the FER and the fire risk.

What is an FER? The Term FER refers to a Fire Engineering Report. This is a document which has been prepared by a qualified Fire Engineer which addresses various fire safety aspects for a building. In particular, the FER will address any “Performance Solutions”, where the Fire Engineer will consider and recommend the implementation of certain Fire Safety Measures which might vary somewhat from the standard “Deemed to Satisfy” requirements in the National Construction Code (NCC) which is also referred to as the BCA or Building Code of Australia.
